Prices [ edit | edit source ]
Air runes do not cost very much money, as players can craft them at a low level and there are many in the game. They are widely used in magic spells and are easy to find. Air runes can be bought from Magic shops for 4 to 25 coins, depending on the stock. Players can buy runes from Aubury’s Rune Shop in Varrock and from the store in Port Sarim. The store at the Void Knight Outpost is often full of stock so they are not as expensive as in other stores.
A popular money making technique among lower level players is to buy these runes from one of the rune shops and then sell them on the Grand Exchange for 1 or 2 coins more.
They can also be purchased from the Nightmare Zone, using 25 reward points.

Pay-to-play Runecrafting training
Contents
This guide describes the most effective methods to train the Runecrafting skill. The experience rate estimates in this guide do not incorporate the use of any experience boosting items or bonus experience. Runecrafting is an artisan skill which involves using runecrafting altars to create runes from rune and pure essence. Levelling up the Runecrafting skill allows players to create runes which award greater amounts of experience when they are crafted. Having a higher Runecrafting level also increases the player’s chance of creating multiple runes from a single piece of essence, though this does not grant additional Runecrafting experience.
Useful equipment [ edit | edit source ]
Master runecrafter robes [ edit | edit source ]
Wearing components of the master runecrafter robes set gives a percentage increase in the amount of base experience that is gained while runecrafting. There are four pieces in the set: the hat, robe, skirt, and boots. Components of the master runecrafter robes can be purchased for 15,000 Runecrafting guild tokens, 4,000 Runespan points or 500 thaler per piece.
Name | Experience boost |
---|---|
1% | |

Total experience boost | 5% |
Ethereal outfits [ edit | edit source ]
Parts of ethereal outfits could be won as prizes from Treasure Hunter. They may also be created from rune ethereal fragments which are received when runecrafting with at least level 70 Runecrafting. The fragments can be assembled into outfit parts with level 80 Runecrafting and 20 Invention.
The death ethereal outfit, law ethereal outfit, and blood ethereal outfit consist of head slot, body slot, leg slot, hand slot and feet slot items. When wearing a complete version of any of these three outfits, players gain the following bonuses:
Players who own all pieces of the death ethereal outfit, law ethereal outfit, and blood ethereal outfit can combine these outfits’ components to form the infinity ethereal outfit. This outfit gives superior benefits to those given by the other ethereal outfits. Players gain the following bonuses from an infinity ethereal outfit:
An augmented weapon with the Wise perk can give up to 4% increased experience.
Catalyst fragment [ edit | edit source ]
The Runecrafter’s Catalyst fragment halves the degrade rate of Runecrafting pouches. It can also be combined into the Combined Catalyst fragment to save space.
Torstol incense sticks [ edit | edit source ]
Each potency level of torstol incense sticks provides a 0.5% increase to base XP gain. The potency level will increase every 10 minutes and will reach its maximum at level 4 (+2% to base XP). Overloading consumes 6 sticks but instantly provides the maximum potency.
Explorer’s Ring 2/3/4 [ edit | edit source ]
The Explorer’s Ring 2 and its superior variants increases the number of elemental runes (Air/Water/Earth/Fire runes) you can craft at a time when equipped, granting additional experience.
Focused siphoning auras [ edit | edit source ]
Focused siphoning auras increase a player’s chance of siphoning successfully from nodes and creatures within Runespan by 3-15% while activated. These auras’ effects last for one hour after they are activated. Players may use 5 or 10 vis wax to extend a focused siphoning aura’s activation time by 50% or 100% (costing 63,670 or 127,340 ). This effect must be applied before the aura is activated. Once a focused siphoning aura has been used the player must wait 3 hours before using it again. Focused siphoning auras can be bought using Membership loyalty points. All lower tiers of the aura must be owned before a higher tier aura can be purchased.
Tier | Percentage chance of siphoning successfully increased by | Loyalty point cost | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Individual | Cumulative | ||||
1 | Focused siphoning | 3% | 5,000 | 5,000 | |
2 | Greater focused siphoning | 5% | 16,000 | 21,000 | |
3 | Master focused siphoning | 7% | 33,500 | 54,500 | |
4 | Supreme focused siphoning | 10% | 61,000 | 115,500 | |
5 | Legendary focused siphoning | 15% | 119,000 | 234,500 |
Urns [ edit | edit source ]
Urns can be used to gain additional Runecrafting experience while training. When held in the inventory, urns are filled as the player runecrafts. Only base experience counts towards filling the urn. Crafting combination runes does not fill urns. Full urns can be teleported away to receive additional experience. Only one urn is filled at a time, though players may own up to a total of 10 full urns. If a player owns 10 full runecrafting urns they must teleport at least 1 away before they can fill more urns. Urns are only tradeable in their (nr), non-runed, forms. In order to use a runecrafting urn the player must add a pure essence to it; this makes the urn untradeable.
Name | Crafting level required to add pure essence | GE price of non-runed urn | Charges gained from | Experience required to fill | Experience gained for teleporting |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
4 | 1,543 | Creating runes and siphoning in the Runespan up to level 9 | 1,050 | 210 | |
18 | 968 | Creating runes and siphoning in the Runespan up to level 27 | 1,750 | 350 | |
33 | 2,247 | Creating runes and siphoning in the Runespan up to level 54 | 3,500 | 700 | |
52 | 1,841 | Creating runes and siphoning in the Runespan up to level 77 | 5,000 | 1,000 | |
77 | 3,508 | Creating runes and siphoning in the Runespan up to level 99 | 7,000 | 1,400 |
Players who have at least level 24 Invention and who have completed Nomad’s Elegy can discover how to make an urn enhancer. When in the player’s inventory the urn enhancer grants 25% additional experience for teleporting a full urn. This effect costs 20 charges from the player’s charge pack. Assuming the player purchases divine charges from the Grand Exchange, it would cost 326.29 to use the urn enhancer when teleporting an urn.
Relic powers [ edit | edit source ]
Relic powers can be obtained through the Archaeology skill to unlock permanent passive buffs to assist in training Runecrafting among other things. Only 3 relic powers with a combined energy cost of 650 or less can be active at one time.
Methods [ edit | edit source ]
Summary [ edit | edit source ]
Levels | Method | Experience per hour | Alternative methods |
---|---|---|---|
1-99 | Runecrafting through the Abyss | 24,750-206,250 (34,650-288,750 using demonic skull) | Players can train at Runespan to gain between 16,500 experience an hour, with level 1 Runecrafting, and 93,000 experience an hour, with level 99 Runecrafting. |
Levels 1-99+: Runecrafting through the Abyss [ edit | edit source ]
To effectively train Runecrafting by travelling through the Abyss, players will need a method to teleport to the Edgeville bank, as well as Runecrafting pouches and pure essence. The use of the Wilderness sword 1, which has an Edgeville teleport as one of its «operate» functions, or better is recommended for teleportation; this teleport is the default option when placing the sword on the action bar. The Wilderness sword 1 is awarded for completion of the easy set of Wilderness Tasks, which has no skill or quest requirements to obtain, but requires 40 Attack to wield. Furthermore, if the player has acquired the Wilderness Sword 3, which is a reward for completing the hard set of Wildnerness Tasks, the Mage of Zamorak sometimes teleports the Player in the inner circle of the Abyss, 20% of the time. However, the sword has to be equipped for this effect to take place. Another option for Edgeville teleporting if available is to use the Slayer cape to Mandrith or Vannaka which will teleport you directly south of the Edgeville Bank.
Additionally, the use of the Nexus Mod relic power is highly recommended, as this causes the Mage of Zamorak to teleport you to the centre of the abyss 100% of the time, speeding up this method greatly. The use of Powerburst of sorcery potions should be considered, as in some cases this could significantly increase the runes produced and the gp/hr of the method, at the cost of a small amount of xp.
Runecrafting pouches can be used to store essence. Essence stored in pouches is automatically used to create runes upon clicking a runecrafting altar. Runecrafting pouches, with the exception of the small pouch, degrade after a certain number of uses. Once a pouch is degraded it will not be able to store as much essence. If a player continues to use a degraded pouch then it will be destroyed. Players can repair pouches for free by speaking to the Dark Mage, who is found at the centre of the Abyss. Players using lunar spells can use the NPC Contact spell to have the Dark Mage repair their pouches remotely or use the Repair Rune Pouch spell to repair their pouches themselves, if they have unlocked this spell through playing Livid Farm. Pouches repaired using the Repair Rune Pouch spell can be used more times before decaying, compared to pouches repaired using other means. The runecrafter’s catalyst fragment or combined catalyst fragment also halve the degrade rate of runecrafting pouches when they are equipped. This stacks with the effect of the ethereal runecrafting outfits. The combined effect is that pouches have a 75% chance of not degrading per use (thus last 4 times longer on average). These fragments are obtained as a reward from completing the grandmaster quest Sliske’s Endgame. Alternatively, the Pouch Protector relic power will disable pouch degradation entirely while active.

The fire rune is one of the four basic elemental runes. Fire runes can be created from Rune essence or Pure essence through the Runecrafting skill, procured from drops by killing monsters, bought from other players, picked up from spawns on the ground, or can sometimes be found inside barrels. Fire runes can be created using the Runecrafting skill at level 14 with a Fire talisman or Fire tiara at the Fire Altar in Al Kharid, which gives 7 experience per essence used. ContentsCrafting multiple fire runes [ edit | edit source ]For more information about Runecrafting multiples, see crafting multiple runes.
Prices [ edit | edit source ]Fire runes often enter the top 3 for most traded items every week in the Grand Exchange. 8.5 billion fire runes were traded in the 180 days leading up to 11 December 2009, and 12.9 billion in the 180 days leading up to 10 August 2010. This averages out to 829 per second, peaking on busy days at over 1650 per second. By 25 August 2010 13.1 billion had been traded in 180 days, which is 842 per second. After a brief dip, this rose again to 13.7 billion over 180 days up until 9 December 2010, 880 per second. It reached its peak in late June 2011, when 2.8 billion fire runes were traded in a mere 7 days, or over 4600 per second. They are currently sold for 133 coins each on the Grand Exchange, or for 17 coins in stores when there are no fire runes in the player stock. For a long time, fire runes had a price floor of 9 coins each in the Grand Exchange. Fire runes reached this price floor, and for over a year, they were very difficult to sell in the Grand Exchange, and would buy instantly. However, in September 2009, Jagex changed the price floor from 9 coins each to 5 coins each. Fire runes were then easily both bought and sold on the Grand Exchange. Following the release of the Polypore staff in 2011, the price of fire runes rose due to the popularity of the staff and the fact that it is charged using 15,000 fire runes, using five per cast. This increased the price dramatically and caused some turbulence on the market. The Evolution of Combat occurred at the end of 2012; it reduces the need of using runes (since abilities do not cost runes), but also changed Blood spells to use fire runes (and always heal when cast as an autoattack and only a small chance with an ability), and made the tier of magic weapon cap the damage of spells and abilities, meaning it became very ineffective to use cheap fire rune-saving staves (e.g. mystic fire staff) to cast higher level (Fire Blast and up) spells. Despite large fluctuations, fire runes remain several times more expensive than other elemental runes. Spells [ edit | edit source ]Fire runes are used in a large number of spells, as listed below. When casting a spell requiring fire runes, the fire rune requirement may be eliminated by wielding a staff that gives infinite fire runes, such as a staff of fire, fire battlestaff, lava battlestaff, mystic fire staff, mystic steam staff, mystic lava staff or mystical staff (discontinued). Staves of fire can be bought from Zaff’s Superior Spellcasting shop in Varrock.
