Description:

This mod has been updated for compatability with War of the Chosen but is still classified as a vanilla xcom mod (exclamation mark next to mod in Launcher) to maintain backward compatability. If you encounter any issues with WotC compatability please post in the WotC bugs discussion thread.

Commander’s Choice lets you set the class of any Rookie who is ready to rank up to Squaddie.

A button has been added on the Armory Soldier Main Menu. By Default Commander’s Choice disables the Promotion Button for Rookies on the After Action screen (screenshot 2). The Promote button on the Armory screen can optionally be disabled as well. This behavior can be customized in the ini.

The Commander’s Choice button will only appear for Rookies that have earned but not yet received a promotion. The PsiOps and Spark classes cannot be changed to or from, for lore and mechanical reasons. The button will not appear for these classes. Any other class, including custom classes (as shown in the screenshot), can be changed to.

WARNINGS:
-Be careful using the next/previous soldier buttons when on the Soldier Abilites screen if you have rookies awaiting class assignment. Changing to a soldier awaiting promotion on while on the Soldier Abilities screen will rank up that soldier, therefore bypassing Commander’s Choice if the soldier is a rookie.
-If you promote a Rookie from the After Action screen instead of the Armory Commander’s Choice will be bypassed. This is why the Button is Disabled by default for Rookies.

ini Location: SteamSteamAppsworkshopcontent268500688405905ConfigXComCommandersChoice.ini
Options:
-Disable the Promote Button for Rookies on the Armory Screen. Default: False
-Disable the Promote Button for Rookies on the After Action Screen. Default: True
-Hide the Promote Button for Rookies on the After Action Screen. Default: False

The UI has a few niggles:
-You may have to click twice on a the Selected class
-The Time of 0 Days is an artifact of the type of menu, I can’t hide it (or haven’t figured out how)
-There is no Cancel/Back button (can’t figure this one out), use the Esc key or choose the class that the soldier already is (this aborts the operation)
-The tooltip for Commander’s Choice might be the Dismiss tooltip.
-The Commander’s Choice button does not work with Controllers at this time.

See FAQ for any issues not listed here.

-This mod has no class overrides and should be compatible with most mods.
-This mod should be compatible with any mod class overrides.
-Compatible with Long War 2 but may cause issues with Hidden Potential

Note: Older versions are available from the Nexus
-1.1.0 Change Squaddies instead of Rookies
-1.0.6 Old Interface

It doesn’t seem to be working. Since there were no install instructions I just copied the archive contents into H:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XComGame» and merged folders.

Mod doesn’t seem to work correctly with Long war 2, however is having some sort of effect. When I go to the screen with a rookie ready to be promoted, and I click on the promote icon, the game then proceeds to stall for a few seconds, then makes the promotion sound twice, then the rookie is promoted to a random class anyway.

I’m honestly not sure what I am doing wrong here. I’ve looked at the main page and this should be working with Long war 2 but it isn’t.

Is it possible to add the option to limit the choice to (for example) 3 classes? (For use with LW2, like Xylth’s GTS).

As with all Steam Workshop mods, I recommend you subcribe and create an archive to use with your manager of choice, to avoid forced updates breking another mod. Co-ordinating updates, when all are ready is a manual procedure.
Then immediately Unsubscribe.
For XCOM 2 mods the Steam Workshop Folder is located, here
..\Steam\SteamApps\Workshop\Content\268500

XCOM 2’s Game >Commander’s Choice folder has it’s Mod >To convert it to a standard XCOM 2 Mod, as used with NMM, and Manual installation, the folder name must match the name of the
.XComMod
File, which for this mod is
CommandersChoice.XComMod

Mod ID Folder = 688405905 = CommandersChoice

Simply put that renamed folder in an archive, and place in your mod Archive folder for NMM, or manual installation
You then have full control of updating, which is vital when mods are dependant on each other.
XCOM 2 is one of the better Workhop’s, due to the games mod isolation methods, but auto-updates, mean it’s still bad, Many games, are much worse.

Here’s the Description on the Workshop

DESCRIPTION
Commander’s Choice lets you to change the class of any squaddie to any other class from the Armory screen. Soldiers above Rank 1 (squaddie) cannot be changed.

The UI has a few niggles:
-You may have to click twice on a the Selected class

-There is no Cancel/Back button (can’t figure this one out), use the Esc key or choose the class that the soldier already is (this aborts the operation)
-The tooltip for Change Class might be the Dismiss tooltip, do not worry it won’t Dismiss your soldier.
-Depending on other mods you may need to scroll the menu down to see the Change Class button

The PsiOps and Spark classes cannot be changed to or from, for lore and mechanical reasons. The menu will not appear for these classes. Any other class, including custom classes (as shown in the screenshot), can be changed to and from.
Long War 2 Compatability
-Not Created Equal and Hidden Potential cause some problems with stats. Try to limit the number of times you change the class of a single soldier, the fewer the better. (Stats like Offense tend to progressively decrease with every class change.)

This mod has no class overrides and should be compatible with most mods.
-If a mod changes the way soldiers rank up it may cause issues with stats.

This was the last must have mod I needed updating, now to restart my LW2 campaign, and promote the first mission rookies. I stopped playing, while I had no choice of class.
Also, because I won’t use Steam Guard, I can’t reply to posts on Steam Forums.
Strangely, I can start a new topic, but not respond, to a reply to that topic.
So if somebody who can post, on Steam, requests a Nexus version, I’d appreciate it.

Nexus Version has been updated. Sorry I have been neglecting this page for so long. I really love the Nexus but the integration between the Xcom 2 mod tools and the Steam workshop makes it so much easier to neglect this page.

Thanks, for updating the mod
Especially for updating it here, better late than never.

Easiest, is rarely better, though as I said XCOM 2 is better than most, but that’s due to Firaxis, not Valve.
I detest Steam, and especially the Workhop, because it auto updates, both mods and games.
Which for a prolific mod user, is a disaster, more often than a good thing, as interdepedncies, need to all be updated in one go, when they are all ready.

GOG is my preffered store, because I can get game installers, and ignore their online client.
Even EA’s Origin lets me refuse updates permanently, or until I’m ready.
Steam only let’s you delay for 24 hours, unless you stick to totally offline mode, for all games, which sort of defeats the point of it being an online store.

Steam ruined my KOTOR 2, by forcing an update, without warning, that broke 10 years of mods, to promote Steam OS/Big Picture mode.
They tried to sell skyrim mods, where Firaxis shows how paid mods should work.
Publisher pays for great mods, which sells more Vanilla games, as with Long War 2.

So apart from getting the files when modders only use Steam, I will never use the workshop.
It’s nothing but a downloading system anyway, and most devs don’t make good mod managers.
NMM is not much better, a jack of all games, master of none. User made managers are almost always better.

Modding is about taking total control of the content, and that’s impossible with Steam.

Mod has been updated on Steam, but not yet on the Nexus.
