Connecting failed after 6 retries гаррис мод
I have been struggling with Gmod for the longest time not being able to connect to servers like I used to years ago until today where I finally found my long wanted solution.
Before explaning the issue I need to address something:
Bandwidth and Throughput are two different things in the networking world. Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that travel through a specified channel whereas Throughput is how much of that data actually does travel through the specified channel. So for example you could have a highway that supports 4 lanes of traffic but during the early morning only 2 of these lanes are taken up. 4 lanes would be the Bandwidth and 2 lanes taken up would be the current Throughput.
With that garbage out of the way here was my issue: Steam had the permissions needed to send me WAY to many packets of data at once when using the server browser within games. This means steam would hog up all the traffic on my network not allowing anything besides recieving server information, keeping me from joining servers. Going back to the highway example this is like trying to fit more cars on the highway at once than the highway can support, it becomes overloaded and cannot respond. Before testing the solution below you could open cmd and try pinging www.google.com or any other website while trying to join a gmod server and see if the ping is successful or not. If not then this might be your issue aswell. This can all be limited with one setting within the steam client.
The Solution: In the steam client go to the upper left hand side and click «Steam» and then «Settings». After this go into «In-Game» on the left hand side of the new window and at the very bottom you will see an option called «In-Game server browser: Max pings / minute». By default this should be set to 5000. Change this down to 1000, while this will make your server browser load significantly slower it will fix the issue if your issue was the same as mine.
Hopfully this fixes your issues and if so please share with others who may be experiencing the same issue!

How does it get you ‘hacked’? I’ve been running servers for TF2/GMod/Minecraft/CSGO/CSS/Killing Floor/L4D2/etc. for years, and I’ve never been hacked. Just having ports open doesn’t mean people can barge in and jack your stuff, they can do so even with your ports closed. If you’d like to elaborate, I’d like to know what your logic your statement is.
If you have a firewall and an antivirus, you’re safe. End of story. If someone else connects to your network, just boot them out and change the password. Boom. Easy. If you get DoSed/DDoSed, you can file a lawsuit, and your ISP can track down who, precisely, started the DoS attack (DDoS attacks, however, aren’t quite as simple). That’s really all there is to worry about.

How do I fix the error «Connection Failed After 4 Retries»?
I am trying to make a Gmod server, and believe I have everything set up correctly. I am using SteamCMD. I port forwarded all TDP/UDP between 27000 and 27050. I also port forwarded these ports in my firewall.
However, my server doesn’t show up on the list after I start it, and when I type «connect xx.xx.xxx.xxx» it says «Connection failed after 4 retries.»
How would one fix this?

Are you running the server on a local machine at your place? In that case, try using internal LAN address to connect to it. If that still fails, the issue is with your computer’s firewall, possibly. Try disabling it momentarily and connect to the server again. If that also fails, then the problem is most likely with SteamCMD. Check that you haven’t accidentally changed the ports it’s supposed to use.
If your server is on a computer with Gmod installed, try connecting to 127.0.0.1. This is the notorious loopback address, and makes the computer connect to itself. If that fails, then the problem is with SteamCMD. Like mentioned above, check that you haven’t accidentally changed the ports it’s supposed to use.
If all else fails, try using the HLDSUpdateTool instead. Although aging, and about to be phased out, it is still a viable alternative.
Is this a server running on your machine or server on another machine in the same network or another machine in the net?
If it is YOUR machine then I’d be just as lost.
If it is another machine, are you both on the same subnet? Are you both in the same workgroup/homegroup(Windows)?
If you’re using Ubuntu and its a local only server run ufw disable to take down your firewall.
If it is in the internet make sure you can ping it, also do this if you’re on the same network.
If it is a local machine, use this to connect: connect 127.0.0.1:27015
