About this mod

This mod places many different kinds of respawnable Legendary Bosses hidden throughout the Commonwealth.

There is also an optional installation file that will replace all of the Behemoths, Mirelurk Queens, and Swan as more difficult respawnable Legendary Giant Creatures.

This mod does not have any known dependencies other than the base game.

I take no credit for this mod whatsoever. All credit for this mod goes to the Author Odolinski. He is the original creator of the idea for this mod and he did all of the groundwork building the mod. I merely just edited the loot tables of the creatures to be more in-line with the difficulty it takes to kill them. They now drop significantly less ammo but the items they drop are a far more useful reward for taking the time to kill them. That way you don’t get an over abundance of loot/ammo from them that will make the game too easy. I made all of the creatures legendary and able to drop all high-end legendary loot and changed the creatures names to be more lore-friendly and immersive. I just made this file for my own person use and preference and after some thought I felt it was something that should be available to everyone.

Odolinski’s mod is located here and I urge you to please go here and endorse his mod file as it is quite excellent!

As of Version 7.0 uploaded 4-23-16 there are currently 27 bosses spawned throughout the Commonwealth 24 of which are different, they are quite strong, they are Legendary, and they drop loot that makes them worthwhile to kill, and give a great bit of experience as well. I have tested all of them in combat and verified all of their locations and placed their spawn points on a map that you can download in the images section.

The optional file is built for people playing with mods around 10% Player Damage and 600% Enemy Damage. Because of that the enemies drop more of some ammo to compensate for the fact that the bosses take essentially 5x as much ammo to kill.

I seek no claim or credit for this mod whatsoever. It was originally created by the mod Author Odolinski, and without his permission I would not have been able to continue and improve upon his mods design. So for that I am very grateful and I thank him.

The changes I have made from his mod are as follows:

I extensively edited the loot tables of all the creatures, renamed the creatures, made them Legendary, increased some of their health and damage values, moved a few spawn points and placed a few new created creatures into the world. Fixed Swan and the Mirelurk King (neither were working as intended)

The Bosses drop significantly less ammo, enough to still make it worth killing them for ammo, but you wont get a ridiculous amount of ammo that will make the game seem too easy. Also the items they drop now are a far more useful reward for taking the time to kill them. They also give a good boost of experience depending on how hard they are to kill.

All of the creatures drop high-end legendary loot and the creatures names are a bit more immersive.

I originally just made this file for my own person use and preference and after some thought I felt it was something that should be available to everyone.

Odolinski’s mod is located here and I urge you to please go here and please also endorse his mod file as this mod would not have been possible without it.

About this mod

Want more Legendary Enemies? Want to remove Legendary Enemies altogether? Choose from a suite of options, and set your own rate of Legendary Enemy Spawns!

Author’s instructions

You may modify or update this mod to account for game version updates as necessary, though it should be compatible for all future updates unless Bethesda majorly changes the way they manage legendary spawning. Just credit me if you do.

Want to see more legendary enemies in the world and get more unique loot, but don’t want to deal with playing on survival? This mod is for you. Alternatively, if you hate the idea of legendary enemies, you can get rid of them all.

Vanilla Legendary Spawning works as follows:

Super Easy: Legendary Enemies appear 0.25x as often relative to normal difficulty.
Easy: Legendary Enemies appear 0.5x as often relative to normal difficulty.
Normal: Base chance to appear.
Hard: Legendary Enemies appear 1.5x as often relative to normal difficulty.
Very Hard: Legendary Enemies appear 2.0x as often relative to normal difficulty.
Survival: Legendary Enemies appear 3.0x as often relative to normal difficulty.

This mod sets it so that while playing on any difficulty, you can set your own rate of legendary spawning.

Meaning you could, for example, set up the following:

Super Easy: Legendary Enemies appear 3x as often relative to unmodded normal difficulty.
Easy: Legendary Enemies appear 3x as often relative to unmodded normal difficulty.
Normal: Legendary Enemies appear 3x as often relative to unmodded normal difficulty.
Hard: Legendary Enemies appear 3x as often relative to unmodded normal difficulty.
Very Hard: Legendary Enemies appear 3x as often relative to unmodded normal difficulty.
Survival: Legendary Enemies appear 3x as often relative to unmodded normal difficulty.

There are other files you can use as well, with different rates of legendary spawning.

Additionally! By default only some enemies have the potential to become legendary enemies by default. You can now customize the Legendary Rate to change what percentage of enemies can become legendary. The default value is 1%. You can now finally see multiple legendary enemies within the same group!

Legendary Rarity affects how many enemies have the «chance» to be legendary. By default, this is placed at 1%. They are added to a metaphorical pool of «potential legendaries.»

Legendary Spawn rate affects how likely it is that individual enemies in that pool of potential legendaries will be actual legendaries.

Changing Legendary Rarity will have a greater effect, since by increasing the «pool» of potential legendary enemies you are drastically increasing your chances of encountering legendary enemies. If you just change Legendary Spawn Rate, you’re still stuck with only 1% of enemies in the pool in the first place, and therefore only 1% of them are affected by said modified spawn rate.

So go easy on changing Legendary Rarity!

Note for those who want to eliminate all legendary enemies from the game: Some legendary enemies are hand placed, particularly in lower level areas. This mod will only eliminate randomly spawned legendary enemies, not those handplaced by level designers.

Version 2.0

Version 1.11

Version 1.1

Version 1.0

Hot damn, we made Hot Files! Thanks to everyone who downloaded and put up with a bunch of seriously broken versions. Extra special thanks to those who contributed in fixing those seriously broken versions.

Funny thing is that I thought that if any of my mods would ever make Hot Files, it’d be Rechambering Plus, which I put a lot more work into and which I think is much better overall. If you feel like stroking my ego and/or validating my existence, give that one a look-see.

Lack of decent legendaries got you blue? Miss the days of when your reward for completing a dungeon wasn’t just a fistful of bullets and a mediocre weapon? I’ve got the fix right here!

What Do

Does what it says on the tin: the boss chests (usually called «Steamer Trunk» or sometimes just «Trunk») found at the end of most indoor and outdoor «dungeons» will now have a random legendary item inside.

The item is generated using a vanilla script called QALegendaryContainerScript which is normally used to generate the cheat/debug «Legendary Items» container (normally it defaults to 100 but this mod only generates one). The container script itself calls on the script used to generate legendaries dropped by normal legendary enemies; I believe this means that the items generated by this mod will be scaled to the player’s level, but frankly I’m not exactly sure.

Thanks to the eagle eyes of user Old Nick (you should check out his mods; they’re probably way less broken) version 1.1 is live! Previously the script would fire every single time the container was loaded, i.e. generating a legendary pretty much every time you look at a boss chest. It will now only do so once when the container is first loaded and then again only if its cell has reset.

The chance is determined by a global variable called ‘BossChestLegendaryChance’ which defaults to 1, i.e. 100% chance to get a legendary. To modify it, simply crack open your console (on U.S. keyboards it’s `/

, above the tab key) and type set BossChestLegendaryChance to X where X is whatever value between 0 and 1 that you want it to be, i.e. a 25% chance would be 0.25.

Compatibility

This mod only alters the records for the boss chest containers themselves; mods that alter the same records will have conflicts.

Simple Intersection and other mods like it alter every vanilla container record in the game, including those that aren’t ordinarily buildable at workshops, presumably to hedge against the possibility of the player using a settlement expansion mod (like Homemaker) that makes those containers craftable. The conflict is mostly unnoticeable, and can be mitigated by loading this mod after Simple Intersection or the like.

When in doubt, prevent this mod from being overwritten by keeping it near the end of your load order.

This mod doesn’t touch the records for leveled lists, legendary effects, or the script for generating legendary items.

As stated above, version 1.1 includes a replacement version of the QALegendaryContainerScript. This isn’t the script that generates legendaries, it just calls that script. Other mods that replace the QALegendaryContainerScript (if such a mod exists) will break this mod.

Version 2.0 does away with the replacement script entirely. No compatibility issues should arise from it.

Issues and Balance

I haven’t done much testing beyond making sure the mod works and doesn’t crash. That doesn’t preclude some massive issue that I have yet to uncover. As with all mods use at your own risk.

Some dungeons don’t have a boss chest as this mod recognizes it. These won’t have legendary items. Sorry.

Likewise, there are a few boss chests that don’t really have a dungeon. The Concord Speakeasy, for instance, has a Steamer Trunk behind a locked door but zero enemies. These are basically free legendaries.

This mod will probably make your game easier since you’ll get more legendaries with no drawbacks. In my mind, something like 90% of legendaries are total garbage anyway, so I don’t think it’s a huge deal. Originally I wanted to have a repeatable radiant quest to generate legendary weapons, like the Treasure Hunt quests you get from the notes you find on dead Gunners and Settlers, but that’s something that will probably have to wait until the Creation Kit.

Obviously this mod doesn’t include the Steamer Trunks you can build at workshop settlements since that would be ridiculous (although it wouldn’t be a bad idea for another mod; spend a bunch of resources for a random legendary).

Installation

Uninstalling should be totally painless. Boss chests that have already been loaded by the game will still have a legendary inside, but no more will be generated going forward.

Other Stuff

This mod was made using FO4Edit, Bethesda Archive Extractor, PexInspector, Champollion, and Caprica. Show them some love if you know what’s good for ya.
