About this mod

Fixes the problem introduced in 1.5.6 with custom banners having their icons set to a single color when loading a save game. Additionally prevents kingdom changes from changing banner colors to align with kingdom colors. Config options available to allow background color changes on kingdom changes, and prevent NPC color changes.

Version 1.0.0

This mod was specifically created to work around an issue that causes custom banners to have all their icon colors set to one color whenever loading a save game.

As of 1.5.6, a code change was introduced that caused all banner icon images to be set to one color. This is not a problem for banners made in game, but caused headaches for custom banners pasted into BL via a mod such as BannerPaste.

This mod will prevent banner icon colors from being modified when loading a save game. Additionally, by default, it will prevent all color changes caused by joining/leaving a kingdom. A configuration file is included with a single config option that you can set to «false» if you would like to allow background color changes only when joining/leaving a kingdom. These changes should not impact the color changes applied to NPC banners when they change factions.

Additionally, as of 1.5.7 more changes to the code caused clothing and armor colors to change independently of the banner leading to the banner being preserved but the clothing and armor changing to the kingdom colors. Latest version of this mod (1.2.0 at time of writing) will fix this issue as well.

And now, as of 1.6.0, BannerColorPersistence contains a fix for the crash that occurs when using a custom banner and opening the inventory or trade screen.

Has been tested and works on 1.5.4, 1.5.5, 1.5.6, 1.5.7, 1.5.8, 1.5.9, 1.5.10, 1.6.0, 1.6.1 beta

Please report any bugs or oddities you find and any suggestions you may have.

Description

Taleworlds decided to pull the implementation of banners for now, most likely because they don’t work perfectly yet.

This mod places banners back in the troops’ hands. Banners are equipped dynamically when a battle is loaded, no more item and troop list modifications and
no more tricking the troops into using the banner like a shield. This means compatibility with every™ other mod!

Which version should I use?

Try using the MCM version first, as it makes it changing settings more comfortable.
If you have many mods and you’re having conflicts with ModLib and MCM, use the Simple version.

The game crashes at start

Probably having to do with blocked DLLs. Read how to fix that in this troubleshooting guide.

When multiple mods use ModLib and MCM the game may crash. When updating mods they may leave unused files behind that may crash the game.

MCM standalone is a requirement for this mod. If you still have problems, use the Simple version, which doesn’t depend on anything and should just run fine.

What are the configuration files for?

If you’re using the MCM version, the in-game menu handles most of the configuration you can tweak, but some settings can’t be put there so you have to use the configuration files. They are always optional features and you’re not required to edit them before playing.

If you’re using the Simple version, all the configurations for this mod are in the ModuleData folder.

The configuration files are very easy to edit. Text editors like Notepad++, Sublime or Atom make it very easy because they color the different parts, but you can also do it with the regular Windows Notepad.

Mod is installed, but there are no banners

The default settings are tuned to be balanced and rewarding as your game progresses. If you’re starting a new game it’s not likely you’ll see any banners. As soon as your army starts to grow and get experience you’ll start seeing more and more banners. You can of course tweak the configuration files to your liking.

Archers, crossbowmen and horse archers

Any unit that carries a bow or a crossbow in battle will lose that weapon whenever they’re given a banner. This is necessary, otherwise they drop the banner. They still use their melee weapons. Whether they get a banner or not is configurable, of course.

Also, if told to Charge, the units with banners will rush the enemy, leaving their fellow archers behind, so be careful. Order them to Advance and they will stay together.

Why do some units drop their banners?

Units drop their banners at the start of a battle when they have a two-handed weapon that can’t be used one-handed.

Additionally, when a troop falls off a horse or is in low health, they will drop their banner and equip their shield if they have it. There’s also a chance they will drop it when retreating (by default, that chance is tied to their experience). This is all configurable.

The mod BannerPeasants, created by Apastron152e9, adds a banner to most if not every troop type by modifying the troop trees, and has a Python script that will programatically add banners to custom troop trees with a lot of options, which is a great tool for other modders. You can see what rules this script follows to add banners and replace equipment in that mod’s description. Originally, we both used the same core idea and uploaded on the same day with a few hours difference completely independent of each other!

I later developed a different way to achieve this, which is the dynamic assignment you see today.

Bear my Banner equips units with banners during the battle loading scene instead of modifying the native equipment sets. This makes it highly configurable and compatible with any mod that changes or adds troop trees. There are also many other features that introduce banner variety, units behaviour and ease of use.

Installation

Install using Vortex or download manually and place in your Modules folder.

I also recommend to use BannerLord Mod Launcher which is a must when using many mods, Fixed Formation Classes to save formation setups and BannerPaste to be able to copy banner codes from the online editor in the banner screen.

Mod compatibility

This mod should be compatible with every item and troop changing mod.

As of version 0.7.0 this mod uses Mod Configuration Menu to add in-game settings. Have a look at that mod’s description for more details.

This mod does not patch any code using Harmony (except the required patches by MCM).

Troubleshooting

If you’re having problems with this mod, first read this troubleshooting guide. If none of that works, read this bug reporting guide and then post bug reports for this mod here.

Development

This mod is still being actively developed and updated regularly. If you’d like to contribute, you’ll find this mod in GitHub.
You’re also welcome to post in this mod’s GitHub issues page about any issues or suggestions you have.

Thanks

Big thanks to BlackHawk for his contributions, his patience and his ongoing help. To To brandonm37211, Kinjoson and Rohzdear for pointing out bugs, suggestions and improvements to the code. To everybody else who took time figuring out conflicts with ModLib, even though I decided to stop using it until option menu mods are stable. To the modding community for publishing the research, conversations and documentation. And of course to TaleWorlds, for having such an open mind to modding and creating the game with that in mind.
