RUSTIC CHILDREN is my attempt to retexture the children of Skyrim in a way that makes them more realistic and more lore-friendly. It’s obvious to anyone who’s played Skyrim, that children were a very low priority for Bethesda. Why that is, is anyone’s guess. What’s always bothered me about the children was not only their unattractiveness, but how they didn’t really resemble the adults at all. Not just their faces, but their clothing as well. The children look as if they were ported from another game entirely.

In fact, that is exactly the case. These are not the children of Skyrim, they are from the older generation of Bethesda games. The children don’t have model-space normal maps for their heads and bodies like the adults, they have regular normal maps, like the older Bethesda games. These children have the same textures as you’ll see in Fallout. What’s worse, Skyrim doesn’t even have unique sets for the two sexes like those earlier games did. There’s a reason all the kids look alike. they’re all using the male child textures. There’s only one texture in the female child folder, and that’s the male body texture with a different style of underwear. Therefore, the females are using the male body normal map, which is awkward to say the least. Fortunately, your children should be clothed at all times, so this will go unnoticed.

UPDATE: I added download options for just the face and body textures for people who are using the children clothing textures in my RUSTIC CLOTHING mod.

Gone are the pubescent Klingon head ridges, the bulbous noses, the swollen lips, and the perpetual frowns. These are lore-friendly children that look like that might’ve actually come from the same species as the adults. Since the boys and girls share the same (male) textures, I endeavored to make them as attractive as practical with the default meshes. Therefore, the boys may appear more «pretty» than some may prefer. It was a tradeoff I was willing to make for better looking girls.

One decision I made in retexturing the bodies was to revise the underwear. In a climate as harsh as Skyrim, a proper undershirt seems a lot more practical than just a skimpy pair of briefs. I think this revision is more lore-friendly (and modesty protecting), while also having the added effect of eliminating any neck seam issues. Even with Mindflux’s ENB patch, you’ll still occasionally see child heads that don’t blend well with their body. With this retexture, that is no longer a problem.

It wasn’t just the Bethesda faces that bothered me, it was the children clothing as well. They looked just as much an afterthought as the body textures. What really bothered me, was they weren’t even lore-friendly. something you can’t accuse Bethesda of very often. The dresses and tunics didn’t resemble the adult clothing in design or level of detail. They just looked thrown together at the last minute. My retextures are based on the adult styles, so they properly fit the look of Skyrim. With the original clothing textures, all three styles used the same normal map (another sign that Bethesda didn’t put any effort into these textures). The three styles are actually recolors of the same exact outfit. The one change I made to the clothing meshes was a minor one. For styles 2 and 3 (for both sexes), I assigned a unique normal map to fit the new retexture. Style 1 (both sexes) stays with the original normal map for greater compatibility with other mods that use that normal map texture (such as Prince and the Pauper). All the styles are based off the original normal map, but the unique details of the new retextures have been added for greater dimensionality.

So, there you have it. Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but I like to tell people what my rationale is for creating my mods. There is a method (and a reason) for my madness. I made 2K and 1K versions these retextures to accommodate as many people as possible, so download whichever suits your setup.

I hope people enjoy this latest edition to my Rustic retexture series.

UPDATE: I added downloads for just the face and body textures for people who are using the children clothing in my RUSTIC CLOTHING mod.

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T READ DESCRIPTIONS:

MY TEXTURES ARE FOR THE ORIGINAL BETHESDA MESHES ONLY. They are not designed to be compatible with other children overhauls like RS Children, TK Children, or Skyrim Child Overhaul (for example).

My clothing textures should be compatible with children clothing replacer mods, such as Prince and the Pauper. If you load my mod after, my clothing textures will take the place of the default outfits.

Post your comments and queries here. The gallery is open, so feel free to post your screenshots. I always enjoy seeing those.

I hope people enjoy this new entry in my Rustic retexture series.

Is it safe too use these textures in Special Edition?
The children are just too ugly and you did a great job on improving them.

Edit: I read a few posts, looks like it is compatible. Thank you all for sharing your experience.

This is just a mesh/texture replacer so will be perfectly safe to install/uninstall mid-playthrough. Fully compatible with Interesting NPCs, Inconsequential NPCs or any other mod that adds children.

If you download the clothing version, you’ll have to convert the meshes using Cathedral Assets Optimiser or NIF Optimiser but the body version will be fine out of the box as it only includes textures. I’d recommend using Rustic Clothing for SE as that already includes the child clothing changes (and is simply the best vanilla clothing texture replacer IMHO).

Translations available on the Nexus

If you want to play with this mod, and are/were experiencing issues, or are playing a fresh install, please follow these steps:
1) Download my mod & install it.
2) Head on over to THIS MOD PAGE and download his version, and read the instructions.

THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE THE MOD INSTALLED & WORKING IN YOUR CURRENT GAME:
To those who already have my old version installed & have fixed the mod’s issues yourself; have made edits for your own game in conjunction with other RSC-dependent mods (like elven children or adoptable children); or have no problems, you do not need to update!

Introduction
This mod changes the appearance of all the vanilla children in Skyrim
and its DLCs, drawing inspiration from DreamBurrow’s really adorable children!

Features

This mod overhauls all vanilla children NPCs’ appearances to fit into the world of Skyrim, somewhere between a modded and a lore-friendly one. It’s a script-free mod that gives them different faces and some custom outfits to make them a little more unique, using meshes, textures, and the CK to put them together.

For avid character creators, this mod might serve as a nice base to build your own children from. It uses the female Enhanced Character Edit head for both boys and girls, so you can mashup your own textures while being able to use many sliders to edit heads with (thanks to ECE & RM), and replace the heads with your own.

The child races are also kind of playable (but will never be extensive or complete), and I recommend it only for those who simply want to run around and take screenshots as a child character, though I’ve seen reports of people playing without issues. YMMV!

1.2.0

For now, I’m planning to play casually and patch the kids from mods as I go along and eventually combine the face patches into a single installer. And also make those children patching guides.

Changes significant to the playable version:
— allow children to wear all armors and clothing without using another patch (changed Armor Race to DefaultRace)
— allow hairstyles from mods like SG Hair, Apachii, and KS Hairdos to appear when creating character
— updated Mogribus’ last changes to children; spells removed, regen rates & starting stats kept

Requires Hearthfire & Dragonborn DLC (or Skyrim LE).
Please don’t manually install this unless you like having a bad time!!
I recommend Mod Organizer. Simply download and follow the prompts.

NOTE: Those who have older versions, please do a clean install just to be sure!

Q: I’m using XPSME and have low frame rate drops when around children, why?
Download the XPSME skeleton for RS Children here and see if it helps.

Q: Where’s the Killable Children/NEC Patch?
Don’t need it; just use Playable patch, it does the same thing. Or, try the Immersive Children instead which fixes the bugs KC/NEC/Playable/any unticking of the «child» flag a mod introduces, though it requires that you patch the mod with SkyProc.

Q: Beast and elven races. Where?
I’ve thought about this several times, but right now it’s not in the plans, sorry! There are nice adoptable beast and elven children mods already, and you can easily create elves using RM/ECE alone. I think something like that could definitely an expansion of sorts, but I’ll leave that for someone else to take up.

Q: What’s in the plans?
A good FAQ, and my to-do list. Aside from the guides, just character patches for the most part.

Q: Is it possible to be bitten and turned into a vampire with the Nord child race?
You’ll have to do some editing in the CK on your own if you want to be able to play as a vampire. WingBro has a detailed explanation on how you can get it working:

I’ve had experience with custom races, and the answer is sort of no. You still get all the effects of a vampire, but you are not recognized as one within the game, and you cannot feed, although you can blood starve. You can fix this by contraction the vampire disease, and once you «get it», close the game. Then open up creation kit, load up the mod and navigate to Character > Race > NordRaceChild, then double click on it. Open up NordRaceVampire as well, then copy the stack of keywords on the right in the NordRaceVampire race over to the NordRaceChild. Then do the same with specials. (Might as well allow some more functionality as a child here as well using the checkboxes if you will be playing the whole game as a child.) If at any point you are going to start a new game, you will have to reset the NordRaceChild.

*Be warned, I don’t know what effects this will have on the npc children in the game, though I don’t suspect anything with happen*

Furthermore, if you don’t want to risk any weird effects on other children, duplicate the NordRaceChild and rename the duplicate to NordRaceChildVampire, then do the same all over. Then once your in-game, use the command: «player.setrace NordRaceChildVampire». This may not work if you are being a vampire lord or any transformation mods.

The Kids Are Alright Renewal

Skyrim Legendary Edition (SLE)

Skyrim Special Edition (SSE)

Skyrim Legendary Edition (SLE)

Skyrim Special Edition (SSE)
