Birch

A birch tree appears similar to a common oak in terms of height and leaves. It is most commonly found in birch forest biomes. Tall birches are found only in tall birch biomes and cannot be grown with saplings without the use of cheats. As with oaks, a birch tree near flowers can generate with a bee nest attached.

Variants [ ]
There are two types of birch trees: a shorter tree that can be grown by the player with birch saplings; and a taller, more rare tree that generates only naturally in tall birch forest biomes. Birch trees that are grown from saplings grow to be 5 to 7 blocks tall, while birch trees in the tall birch forest biome can generate up to 13 blocks in height (not considering leaves).
Leaf arrangement [ ]
All birch trees lack branches. Birch trees always grow around 50 to 60 leaves. The leaf distributions are shown visually above, each table cell representing one ‘slice’ of the tree viewed from above. The transparent leaves represent areas where leaves may grow, but do not always. The growth pattern, in detail, is as follows:
Small oak and 1×1 jungle trees also have this arrangement of leaves.
Generation [ ]
Regular birch trees generate in forests, birch forests and dark forests, while tall birch trees only generate in tall birch forests.
A regular birch near flowers may generate with a bee nest attached.
Blocks and items [ ]
These items can be obtained from birch trees, except that saplings cannot be obtained from tall birch:
Planting [ ]
Birch saplings can be planted on:
Only normal birch trees can be grown from saplings. Tall birch trees generate naturally in the world.
Birch trees require a 3×3 column of unobstructed space at least 6 blocks above the sapling to grow (7 blocks including the sapling itself). Additionally, birch trees require 5×5 layers without obstruction for the top 3 layers of its final height. No horizontal clearance is needed at the base of the tree (a sapling planted in a hole 1 block deep can still grow).
A birch tree grown from a sapling and within 2 blocks of a flower has a 5% chance of having a bee nest containing 1–3 bees.
Birch Forest
A birch forest biome.
Birch Forests are lush temperate biomes, usually generating near other lush biomes. There are four variants in the biome family.
Contents
Description [ ]
Birch forest biomes are quite hilly, featuring a vast amount of birch trees across the landscape. They generate densely, but not densely enough to cast sufficient shadows to allow hostile mobs to spawn in daytime. Rose bushes, lily of the valleys, lilacs and peonies generate in these biomes commonly, as well as the usual dandelions and poppies.
Like almost every other land biome in the game, water and lava lakes can generate here, which may cause fast-spreading fires due to the density of flammable trees. Like forest, shallow lakes may also generate in here.
The grass and foliage color is turquoise, making them hard to distinguish from rivers, which often run across this biome.
No unique mobs or structures are found in this biome.
These biomes provide a source of wood and animal food, much like the main forest. Building shelter here might be frustrating, due to having to clean up the zone before and because of the reduced block palette that this biome offers compared to other biomes.
Variants [ ]
There are a total of four distinct birch forest biome variants.
Birch Forest [ ]
Birch Forest is the standard and most common birch forest biome variant, with slightly hilly, forested terrain and normal-height birch trees.
Forest
Forests are temperate biomes. There are a total of three variants in the biome family. They are the most common biome in Minecraft, being only slightly more common than plains.
Contents
Description [ ]
Forest biomes are common, flowery, and densely wooded with oak and birch trees. Lilies of the valley, lilacs, rose bushes, and peonies are found alongside the usual dandelions and poppies. Wolves spawn in forests, making this the only other biome aside from taigas where wolves can spawn. Lakes are frequent, and like the jungle biomes, forests also generate shallow lakes that are much larger than small ponds generated in other biomes.
Forests may also generate in patches within plains; these patches are only a couple hundred blocks in size, making forests some of the smallest biomes. Forests and their variants sometimes generate on islands within deep oceans.
Forests are one of the most preferred biomes to start a survival world, serving abundant amounts of wood, grass and flowers, water, and passive mobs, and they do not have many dangers aside from the usual hostile mobs. Tamed wolves can help fight against hostile mobs, making them especially useful for when players lack resources for armor. The density of the trees, however, can obstruct vision and get a player lost quickly; random surface-level lava pools are possible, albeit rare, and start forest fires when close to trees.
Variants [ ]
The main forest biome has two additional variants, for a total of three different forest biomes. Not included are dark forests and birch forests, as they are considered separate biomes.
Forest [ ]
Forest is the standard forest biome variant and the most common biome in Minecraft. Along with plains, it was one of the first biomes in the game. Wolves may spawn here, and shallow lakes sometimes generate here.
